Live at Birdland is a 1964 album by jazz musician John Coltrane. Despite its title, only the first three tracks were recorded live at the Birdland club; the rest are studio tracks. Among them is "Alabama", a tribute to four children killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, an attack at a Birmingham, Alabama church by white supremacists.
Recorded between the '62 album "Coltrane" and the '64 album "Crescent" (both with the same band), this album fills in a hole in Coltrane's studio recordings. Plus the band was coming off a two week gig at Birdland where they were blowing minds setting a new horizon in the jazz genre, so they were really together as a group. Coltrane's bluesy minor key workouts are in evidence on this album using both tenor and soprano saxes.

It was still two years before Ascension, where he opened up his quartet into an experimental, spiritually minded big band, but he was already heading towards its free jazz sound. The lost session was recorded during a two-week run of shows at Birdland – Coltrane played the club straight after the session – and the following day, 7 March, he recorded the album John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman with the jazz singer (its tracklisting changed on the way to the studio, after the pair heard Nat King Cole singing Lush Life on the radio.

If you love John Coltrane, or just like him a little bit, you will instantly fall in love with this album, just as I did. This is a record for fans of Trane's early and late periods alike. Any true lover of jazz will appreciate this beautiful music. This album is good needless to say (It's Coltrane live for god sake) But inferior to One Down One Up: Live at the Half Note, Live in Japan, and Live at the Antibes Jazz Festival. The 39 minute (theres not even a bass solo (!)) version of Afro Blue on Live in Japan is mind blowing and orgasmic. As to where this version is just really really good. But yeah, this album is really good, I just wish the songs were longer with more time to develop. matt drummist January 10th 2007.
