The album was a recording of an Elvis Presley concert that contained almost no actual music, and instead consisted mainly of banter and jokes between numbers, compiled in an incomprehensible manner Metal Machine Music, Lou Reed (1975).
Why is this album the best album ever released? As a musician myself, it has taught me that music isn't just lyrics that's pieced together with a guitar or keyboard, it's something that can be shaped and shifted into so many different ways. The Wall is not just an album, it's a story, or perhaps an autobiography that was shifted to make the plot more desirable. This is the most influential album of all time. As someone pointed out, none of the above would have been made hadn't it been for Pet Sounds, including Revolver (Revolver came after Pet Sounds and actually already featured songs inspired by this, Pet Sounds itself was inspired by Rubber Soul).
And most promising new artists of the past few years are prepping projects that could take them from the JV squad to varsity pop players. Below, the 40 albums we're most looking forward to in 2019. Enigmatic electronic musician James Blake released his last album, 2016’s sweeping, gospel-influenced The Colour In Anything, with just a few hour’s notice. This time, he gave us about a week’s heads-up, announcing the follow-up a mere eight days before its release.
In August, The Eagles' greatest hits album, released in 1976, surpassed Michael Jackson's 1982 album "Thriller" to take the top spot on the RIAA's (Recording Industry Association of America) list of the highest-selling albums of all time in the US. Leadoff track Beast and the Harlot, a r-metal romp replete with ridiculously over-the-top imagery and a singsong-y chorus ornamented with pop-classical guitar arpeggios, was the standout, but the entire album was a blast from beginning to end, all rollercoaster riffing, tumbling drums and warp-speed shredding.
The value of a mastercrafted album full of interesting ideas and boundary-pushing sounds cannot be overstated. It’s equal parts fuzzy nostalgia and ambitious innovation.
