214 stands as a very peculiar song title in Rivermaya’s debut album tracklist. As the eighth track and the second single off that album, it is a standard love song about wanting someone by their side forever. According to a 2004 thread on PinoyExchange, a user asked the band via mail what the song meant and the following response from frontman Rico Blanco provides the entire story: Okay, okay. This is the story behind 214. We were already recording the song but still had no title for it. Ayoko naman ng ‘Forever by your side’ or ‘The world could die’ or some other cheesy title. But then again sometimes we wish we could’ve thought of a better title. Anyways, when the album came out we got all sorts of cool interpretations from rivermaniacs all over the country. 214, they thought, meant To a girl or BAD or A-wit Ng Ka-ba-ta-an.

On their first-ever full-length release (and first for the Relapse label), 2007's The Red Album, the riffs are quite reminiscent of guitar-driven, post-hardcore bands out of the mid-'90s (a style which would later serve as the basis for emo bands several years later), while singer/guitarist John Baizley only knows. one way to vocalize: holler, holler, holler. Think a more metallic Fugazi or Sunny Day Real Estate, and you're not far off from the brand of rock & roll that Baroness specializes in, as evidenced by such standouts as "The Birthing" and "Wanderlust.
