The Prime Time record covers a couple of different styles including rock driven free-jazz, 80s styled looped beats with occasional sampled 'hits', as well as some classic 'Ornette-jazz' that is unsuccessfully 'updated' and hence encumbered and harnessed to overly loud 80s styled gated snare beats. On the other hand, there are also some very successful attempts at weird avant world beat in the mix too.

Coleman and the other members of his 1950s quartet, trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Billy Higgins, performed on one of the two records, while his electrified ensemble, Prime Time, performed on the other. The double album was originally released by Caravan of Dreams, which also issued the title as a single cassette or compact disc Critical reception.

Coleman's turn of the '70s, pre-Prime Time quartet with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell always felt somewhat overshadowed in his discography - it was the Skies of America era, too, and the expanded lineups for the Science Fiction/Broken Shadows sessions - so this more than welcome spotlight on that unit is exactly what a veteran Ornette Coleman hand would.

Prime Time continued to perform, but evolved to include keyboards, as well as Indian classical percussionists. In 1991, Coleman and the Master Musicians of Jajouka performed on the score for the David Cronenberg film The Naked Lunch, and in 1994 the pianist Geri Allen joined Coleman’s New Quartet, with Moffett’s son Charnett on double bass, and Denardo on drums. Original Coleman anthems, including Lonely Woman, Peace, Focus on Sanity and Congeniality, have now become jazz standards, reinterpreted all over the world.
