SIRÈNE, by Robert Curgenven. 4 July 2018 ·. A moment from the recent world premiere of "Tailte cré-umha (Bronze Lands)" for pipe organ & soundsystem at St. Fin Barre's Cathedral for Cork Midsummer Festival - like trying to single out the enveloping, evolving feeling you get inside a wave. Thanks to all who attended.
Robert Curgenven (1974) is a composer/sound artist drawing on the physicality of sound - not just the physical impact on the body but the way in which the auditory can shape our perception of space and the flow of time, from architectural to open space. His works span pipe organ through to feedback, immersive resonances via turntables and custom-made vinyl, as well as carefully detailed field recordings from remote areas in Australia where he lived for many years.
Curgenven writes: "This was filmed on the lunette of Lake Mungo, an ancient lake bed in Australia's New South Wales, 1000 kilometers from the coast and home to the Barkindji, Nyiampaa and Mutthi Mutthi peoples. It is also the site of the oldest human remains in the world.

This album, London-based Australian artist Robert Curgenven's second in the space of a few months, is centred on themes of colonisation: of land, of peoples, of the environment. Of course, as with the musings on the seascapes surrounding Cornwall (where his ancestors hail from) that formed the basis for previous opus Sirène, these concepts are ambiguous and abstract, refracted through the myriad details and clever compositions that make up the music on They Tore The Earth And, Like A Scar, It Swallowed Them.
