John Douglas Lord (9 June 1941 – 16 July 2012) was an English composer, pianist, and Hammond organ player known for his pioneering work in fusing rock with classical or baroque forms, especially with Deep Purple, as well as Whitesnake, Paice Ashton Lord, The Artwoods, and The Flower Pot Men. In 1968, Lord co-founded Deep Purple, a hard rock band of which he was regarded as the leader until 1970. Together with the other members, he collaborated on most of his band's most popular songs.

If "You Really Got Me" didn't sell, there was a good chance their record label would have dropped them. When The Kinks heard the first version they recorded of this song, they hated the results. It was produced by Shel Talmy, their manager at the time, and Ray Davies thought it came out clean and sterile, when he wanted it to capture the energy of their live shows. Jon Lord is the most influential keyboard player in the land of heavy, no-nonsense rock ‘n’ roll. I’m glad I am not starting right now, because it would be really hard to decide what to play. Should you go analog, digital, or play, God forbid, a Hammond organ. It’s difficult choice, regardless. It was a few years before the first Purple album. I got my hands on an L-100, which looks like an upright piano. I got my first C-3 on February 12,1968- I’m much better at remembering dates than describing technical stuff- during the time of Deep Purple’s first rehearsals.

When friends and colleagues of Jon Lord got together to celebrate his life in music at London's Royal Albert Hall in April 2014, the evening turned into a magnificent display of love, affection and glorious music.
