Dave Grohl wrote and recorded the entire album himself, apart from a guest guitar spot by Greg Dulli, with the assistance of producer Barrett Jones at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. He claimed that he recorded the album just for fun, describing it as a cathartic experience to recover from the death of Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain.
The record is the debut of the Foo Fighters as a group, as the band’s previous record, Foo Fighters (1995), was primarily recorded by frontman Dave Grohl and friend Barrett Jones as a demo. After the project ballooned and became an international success, the group convened for pre-production in the fall of 1996 and brought in producer Norton to establish a pop sensibility for the tracks. The band strived to create a full-fledged rock record, although the music press predicted another grunge offshoot. So they thought the album was called The Colour and the Shape because it’s a lot more colorful, and it shows more of the band’s personality. And since it’s the first time we’ve all recorded together, it’s sort of the color and the shape of the Foo Fighters. So we said, OK, that works. It’s better than the stupid tour anecdote joke.
Given the unexpected success of the self-titled first Foo Fighters album, many fans and critics alike were expecting more of the same on the band’s second album. But Grohl, who had played almost all of the instruments on the debut, envisioned something much bigger and grander for the record that would become The Colour and the Shape. The first album was recorded in about five days, he told the Montreal Mirror in October 1997. I really didn’t pay much attention to the production or the arrangements. It was just ‘Get in the studio and get it done.
Foo Fighters’ debut album was never really intended to be a major release. If it had, Dave might have spent more than five days on it and not on his own, save for the efforts of producer Barrett Jones and The Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli (who played a guitar part on the track X-Static). I could never have made an album like this new one on my own, said Dave of its follow-up, The Colour And The Shape, which is still widely regarded as the band’s finest album to date. And you know what? doesn’t sound like one person was playing all the instruments. When you throw different personalities and. And then there was Everlong, the band’s most enduring classic; a beautiful combination of the delicate and dynamic styles cultivated on The Colour And The Shape, it had started out as the band’s attempt to copy art rockers Sonic Youth. Hey, Johnny Park! began life as Dave’s attempt to contact his titular childhood friend, who used to live across the street.

Foo Fighters were formed in 1995 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Grohl was Nirvana’s drummer for a time period of four years. During this time he wrote many songs. Unfortunately the bands musical quality stopped rising after the Foo’s second official release The Colour And The Shape. After that album there seemed to be a slight decline in the quality of the bands music. Although they haven’t been able to top their second release yet, I myself till have high hope for the future. The Colour And The Shape is sort of a gloomy, depressing album. Many tracks seem to deal with relationship problems and etc. Based on that you probably won’t want to listen to this album everyday, unless your life is extremely depressing.
