Filth is the debut studio album by American experimental rock band Swans. It was released in 1983 through Neutral Records, following the release of the band's self-titled debut EP in 1982. Though it did not receive much contemporary attention, Filth has since been recognized as ahead of its time and significant to heavy genres of music. Musically, the album is bleak, grinding, and deliberately repetitive, defined by two bassists persistently doubling over the same chord.

Never knew Michael Gira made workout tapes. This album is brutal. The instrumentals are loud and noisy, and the lyrics are vague but straightforward and haunting. A lot of moments in the album definitely stuck out more than I originally expected, as with your typical debut noise rock album. I can tell they're definitely going to evolve from this later in their career. But this wasn't too bad of a debut.
First proper album by Swans - originally released on vinyl only by Neutral Records in the US and licensed to Zensor for German/European release. Filth was officially reissued on vinyl again in 2014 in a newly remastered form, by Young God Records in the US and as a collaboration with Mute Records in the UK/Europe - this time under its original name.
This is not an album but a musical world, and one in which one must immerse oneself in and once inside will be brought down to its disgusting, depressing level (and cannot leave). Micheal Gira howls like a leper over discordant noise and feeling. Jonathon Kane contrasts his painful vocals with stark and functional drumming.
