Contrasts like this illustrate what The Old Grey Whistle Test was about: putting the best music, whatever its form, into the living rooms of the nnels public. Presented as the first part of a series of OGWT collections, this double-disc release does slip up in not featuring more recordings from the show itself. Only two tracks – Patti Smith’s Because the Night (a co-write with Bruce Springsteen, originally appearing on 1978’s Easter) and Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat – are presented as live-on-the-BBC versions. But perhaps it’s good to keep a few big guns in reserve, in line for volume two. It’s sad – really, really sad – that there is no obvious equivalent to The Old Grey Whistle Test on television today. 18 Wonderous Stories. 19 Stone Fox Chase (theme from The Old Grey Whistle Test).

The Old Grey Whistle Test has now been synonymous with quality music for 40 years. Although possibly best know as a show for Rock music, the show maintained an amazing variety when it came to choosing it's artists, it really only had two criteria, 1, that the artists had released an album and 2 that they produced great music. Second - the booklet (as you can imagine for a comp pitched at a fiver) is a crappy 8-page affair that spends much of its time advertising the other discs in this series. The tiny liner notes by the much admired Bob Harris (the show's first and most famous presenter) are merely adequate, but are also staggeringly misleading in that they mention Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Roy Harper and Richard Thompson - when none of these Folk-Rock giants feature on the compilation itself - a sloppy and lazy approach to say the least.
The bonus tracks were recorded live on the Old Grey Whistle Test and cover the shows entire 16 years and as such have a more diverse feel with artists from Alice Cooper and John Lennon to Magazine and Simple Minds. The album is packaged in a deluxe reverse board digipak. Peak level 9. % Extraction speed . X Track quality 10. % Test CRC 13BC4D8A Copy CRC 13BC4D8A Accurately ripped (confidence 6) Copy OK.
