In League with Dragons has a very eclectic sound. A large team worked on the instrumentation, resulting in a more diverse sound than any previous release This is the most different sounding record we have made. This does not sound like any other Mountain Goats record. It sounds like a continuation from where we have been, but nothing is this expansive, nothing is this varied, nothing has this many people playing as many different instruments. It’s still building – it’s not like we made a power metal record or anything but it sort of feels like, what are we burning down? Well, in a sense, we’re doing something completely different, but at the same time, finding something at the center which is still the Mountain Goats.
The Mountain Goats aim to sculpt a new musical genre, dragon noir, on the band’s new album In League With Dragons, the latest LP and partial rock opera from John Darnielle’s prolific indie rock outfit. The band recorded the 12-song In League With Dragons with producer Matt Ross-Spang at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios. Somewhere in this equation fits Younger, the sprawling first single from In League With Dragons, with Darnielle weaving a languid tale amid a mounting wave of acoustic guitars and horns that meld into a clarion call. Darnielle concluded, I am earnestly hoping that a new genre called ‘dragon noir’ will spring from the forehead of nearly two years’ work on these songs, but, if not, I am content for this to be the sole example of the style.
Plus, frontman John Darnielle will live stream a concert from the Dungeons & Dragons headquarters. The Mountain Goats have announced their seventeenth (!) studio album. It’s titled In League with Dragons and is set to arrive April 26th through Merge Records. While the band’s preceding record, 2017’s Goths, was inspired by The Cure and Joy Division, this new album sees the group exploring the worlds of fantasy and sci-fi. According to frontman John Darnielle, the LP began life as a rock opera about a besieged seaside community called Riversend ruled by a benevolent wizard

Every Mountain Goats album is, on some level, a conceptual writing exercise; it seems to be how frontman John Darnielle’s brain works. But one of the remarkable things about In League With Dragons, the band’s 18th and newest album, is how far Darnielle ventures afield from the album’s whole stated idea. Darnielle has said that he started out writing In League With Dragon as a rock opera set in a fantastical realm. It’s certainly well-timed for a moment when so many of us are spending so many hours thinking about dragons and fantastical realms.

In 1996, the Mountain Goats released the album Nothing for Juice, and Full Force Galesburg the following year. Rachel Ware left the band between recording the two albums, and bassist Peter Hughes took over her position. Between 1998 and 2000, the Mountain Goats slowed down their prolific output, releasing The Coroner's Gambit in October 2000. The album partially returned to the band's roots, as most songs were sporadically recorded on Darnielle's old Panasonic RX-FT500 cassette deck Boombox, which produced a loud background noise to the songs. In January 2019, the band announced the April 26 release of their Dungeons & Dragons inspired album, In League with Dragons (and released initial single, "Younger"), via Merge Records Members.
