Christoph Willibald (von) Gluck (2 July 1714 - 15 November 1787) was a German composer, one of the most important opera composers of the Classical music era, particularly remembered for Orfeo ed Euridice. Gluck's operatic reforms, eliminating all that was undramatic, were a turning point in the history of the medium. Gluck's musical legacy was around 35 complete operas, together with numerous ballets and instrumental works. His reforms influenced Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, particularly his opera Idomeneo (1781).

Helen Donath, Members of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Sir Colin Davis Interlude: Variation III - Scene 4: The Tower. Marilyn Horne, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Sir Georg Solti Aria: "Che farò senza Euridice?" (play). Marilyn Horne, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Henry Lewis "Cruda sorte! Amor tiranno!" (play). Marilyn Horne, Helen Donath, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Sir Georg Solti Chiamo il mio ben così.

Pilar Lorengar, Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Georg Solti. 3. Arioso: "Che puro ciel, che chiaro sol". Marilyn Horne, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Georg Solti. 4. Vieni ai regni del riposo. In the late 1960s the Royal Opera House mounted a composite "Orfeo" for Marilyn Horne, with her darkly brilliant timbre, huge range and spectacular coloratura technique. A latter-day Viardot, Horne is indeed mightily impressive, imperious in her bravura showpiece, complete with the surreal two-octave cadenza concocted by Viardot and Saint-Saens, passionate in her encounter with the Furies. Pilar Lorengar makes a sympathetic. Eurydice, Helen Donath a charming Cupid.
