Pinups (also referred to as Pin Ups and Pin-Ups) is the seventh studio album by David Bowie, containing cover versions of songs, released in 1973 on RCA Records. Pinups entered the UK chart on 3 November 1973 (coincidentally the same day as Bryan Ferry's covers album These Foolish Things) and stayed there for 21 weeks, peaking at No. 1. It re-entered the chart on 30 April 1983, this time for fifteen weeks, peaking at No. 57. In July 1990, it again entered the chart, for one week, at No. 52.

Pin Ups fits into David Bowie's output roughly where Moondog Matinee (which, strangely enough, appeared the very same month) did into the Band's output, which is to say that it didn't seem to fit in at all. Just as a lot of fans of Levon Helm et al. couldn't figure where a bunch of rock & roll and R&B covers fit alongside their output of original songs, so Bowie's fans - after enjoying a string of fiercely original LPs going back to 1970's The Man Who Sold the World - weren't able to make

Pin Ups, David Bowie’s album of 60s cover versions, was released 45 years ago today, and was possibly the last great glam rock album of all time. Either way, it still sounds amazing and if you’ve not heard it in a while, reacquaint yourself with it on this site now. The David Bowie/Ken Scott produced album was preceded by the only single from Pin Ups, Sorrow, which reached on the UK chart.

Notes

This issue is almost identical with Bowie* - Pinups,
but the rear sleeve has AS as Price Code, not AO and the tracks written in red are positioned a bit higher, so the writing of "mind" goes over the price code.
Labels and matrices/runouts are identical, but in addition, there is "Manufactured in Germany" stamped on both sides and there is no hand-etched 'Z' in runout B.
Bowie* - Pinups has black Labels.

Release title as 'Pinups' on sleeve and spine but as 'Pin-Ups' on the disc labels.
David Bowie appears as 'Bowie' on front sleeve and inner gatefold, but as 'David Bowie' on spine and labels.

Ken Scott is credited as producer on labels, but only as co-producer on inner gatefold.
